Eleni Moka

President of European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) Dr Eleni Moka was born in Athens, Greece in 1973. She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine (School of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) in 1996, and after her graduation, she completed her 5–year residency training in the Specialty of Anaesthesiology (Aretaieion University Hospital, Athens, Greece), followed by successful board examinations in 2003. From March 2004 until now, she works as a Consultant Anaesthesiologist in Heraklion–Crete, Greece (Hellenic HealthCare Group Institution – HHG), with her main topics of interest being Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Management, Enhanced Recovery after Surgery, Ambulatory Anaesthesia, as well as TOE in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia. In parallel, from March 2004 and up to now she holds the position of Head of Anaesthesiology Department at her institution. She has received training during and after specialty completion in Regional Anaesthesia, PNBs application with NS and US, Pain Therapy and Palliative Care, Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and TOE Echocardiography, in Greece and abroad. In 2014 she received official post graduate leave (sabbatical) and worked in salaried position as a specialist in UK for a six month period, mainly for advancing her TOE skills. She supported her Doctorate Thesis in October 2010 and was awarded her PhD with Honours in June 2011 from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. In 2015 she was awarded her MSc in Health Care Management with Honours by the University of Cyprus (OUC). She is ESRA-DRA Diplomat (2015), following successful written and oral exams, and it is estimated that at the end of 2025 she will complete her second MSc in Pain Therapy (Athens University, Greece). She has authored chapters in Greek Medical Books, publications in national and international peer reviewed journals, whereas she has been invited speaker and instructor in many Greek, European or International congresses, with her work having also been recognized by awards for presentation of free papers or posters. Currently she is serving as Vice Chair of ESRA Hellas, the zone of ESRA in Greece and Cyprus. From September 2011 till 2015, she was member of ESRA Council, as the Greek Representative. In 2015 she has been elected ESRA Board Member for 3 years and from 2018 – 2022 she served as ESRA Treasurer. In September 2022 she was honoured by being elected the forthcoming President of ESRA (ESRA President Elect), and she serves as President of ESRA from 2023 and for 3 years. She has served as ESRA-DRA Board Member for the period 2013 – 2019. Currently she continues her involvement in the Diploma activities as ESRA-DRA examiner. She has been reviewer or/and member of Editorial Board in international journals (Pain Practice, Journal of Minimally Access Surgery, Journal of Anaesthesiology & Clinical Pharmacology, Cureus Journal, Signa Vitae Journal, Clinical Pharmacology and Pain Research & Treatment Journal). She is also RA Section Editor of Signa Vitae Journal, since 2020 and associate editor in RAPM since 2024. She has participated in multicenter trials and surveys at the national and european or international level (EuSOS, Regional Anaesthesia Application in Greece, OMG Study, Plan A PNBs, AI, Thromboprophylaxis Recommendations in Orthopaedic Surgery, NAP8 project, ICAROS and other). She is an enthusiastic and passionate teacher and loves to disseminate topics related to her scientific interests. As such, in October 2024 she has been elected as Ass. Professor of Anaesthesiology in Faculty of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, with an estimation to take over this position in August 2025.

Nat is a consultant anaesthetist at the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. He is RA-UK President, ESRA Council member and sits on the Association of Anaesthetists UK (AoA) council. He is clinical lead for regional anaesthesia for STSFT where he introduced one of the first block rooms in the UK. He is course director for the Sunderland Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia (SUGRA) course. He is co-lead for the University of East Anglia MSc in Regional Anaesthesia, is an invited speaker for both the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and the AoA and is a regular international speaker. He led the development of the UK’s Prep, Stop, Block national patient safety initiative. He sits on the RCoA’s Anaesthesia Associates scope of practice core writing group, co-authored the recent RCoA General Provision of Regional Anaesthesia chapter and is a member of the latest UK National Audit Project (NAP8) steering group. He also co-authored the RA-UK/British Society of Orthopaedics nerve injury guidelines.

His research interest focuses on patients’ outcomes after orthopedic surgery, specifically patient who receives regional anesthesia in different clinical settings. He is especially interested improving patient outcomes after major joint arthroplasty and defining the value added by regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine to patients’ perioperative experience. Nabil was a member of the Board of Directors for the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) from 2018-2022. He also chairs educational track subcommittee on regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).

I was a sub investigator for multi centre double blind research study on “Comparison of Intermittent Boluses to Simple Continuous Infusion on Patient Global Perceived Effect in Intrathecal therapy for Pain”, which is due to complete soon. The interim analysis of the study results were presented as poster presentation at NANS ASM, 2013, USA. Sub Investigator for research project “Assessment of effect of pulsed RF lesioning of DRG on affective & Pain components of pain in Brain by fMRI” for ethics committee approval and recruiting patients @ JCUH. As research associate at The James Cook University Hospital, UK, I was actively involved in this study- “effect of intravenous vasopressor on spread of spinal anaesthesia and fetal acid-base equilibrium – a randomized and double blinded prospective study”.
